Spending their summer holidays at their grandparents’ house by the sea, Sam and her two brothers play a series of dangerous games, pitted against each other yet united in their secrecy from the grown-ups. But when they discover a fierce dog mysteriously trapped in an electrical substation, they face their first real challenge, one from which they cannot walk away.
Meanwhile, on a long weekend in Germany, their aunt, Kate, and her new lover find themselves playing games of their own. In the red-light district of Munich, will Kate’s surprising challenge for her boyfriend strengthen or destroy their relationship?
Many years ago, Sam’s grandfather, Richard, also played an unusual game, encouraged by a stranger, as part of a scientific experiment. The choices he made then have haunted him ever since. As Sam delves into her grandfather’s secret she discovers that where free will turns to blind obedience, true horror lies.
Deutschland edition by Martin Wagner Literature Fiction eBooks
Three stories in one all interlinked by family and the strange compunction that exists in the human psyche to follow orders. Sam is spending the summer with her two brothers at their grandparents house near the coast, where they get up to games that seem to get increasingly dangerous.Their aunt, Kate is also on holiday, but with ulterior motives. Her mother is a Jewish survivor of the Nazi `final solution'. She wants to see if Germany has repented or if she can forgive a nation with collective guilt. She has also brought her new boyfriend, and thinks he is a keeper, but has decided to set him a few tests just to make sure and they are not multiple choice.
The Grandfather - Richard- is from the US and has an episode from his past that he is ashamed of, but like a moth to a flame, keeps coming back to it. In returning to the scene of the crime it always increases the likelihood of actually getting caught out. All the stories have a similar resonance., but the dénouement of all makes this a page turner.
This is a relatively short book and both accessible and easy to read. It is the message that oozes subtlety and dread and that is what makes it such an interesting read. It also took me a while to get into it, but once I did then I was hooked to the end which proves that sometimes the best things come in small packages.

Deutschland edition by Martin Wagner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The cover image may make you think of a Cujo-like horror novel, but, although a scary dog on a chain does appear about a third of the way in, Deutschland is a work of literary fiction with the theme of moral/ethical choices. The novel is short– about 150 pages – set in England, over the summer holidays, which three grandchildren are spending with their grandparents at their seaside house. Thought-provoking reading that leaves many questions unanswered or ambiguously answered, it reminded me a bit of The Red House by Mark Haddon (with its tangle of family members misunderstanding each other) but Deutschland is much more straightforwardly written (no stream of consciousness).
